How to find an Instagram username with this tool
- 1
Enter your name, niche or brand
Give it the words you want people to connect with you: your first name or brand name, plus what you post about. “Maya, sourdough baking for beginners” gives far better handles than “food”.
- 2
Choose a style
Professional stays close to your name, Minimal keeps it as short as possible, Creative and Playful mix in wordplay, and Luxury suits fashion, beauty and premium brands.
- 3
Check it on Instagram, then claim it
Tap a handle to copy it and try it in Edit profile, where Instagram tells you if it is already taken. Nothing you like? Click More for a new batch.
Instagram username rules
An Instagram username can be up to 30 characters long and may only use letters, numbers, periods and underscores. There are no spaces, hyphens, emoji or other symbols, and every username has to be unique across Instagram. That is why most of the obvious short names were claimed years ago, and why the usable space is in combinations of words.
Your username is not the only name on your profile. The Name field, shown in bold above your bio, can contain spaces and read naturally (“Maya Okafor | Sourdough”), and people can find you by it in search as well as by your handle. So the handle does not need to carry everything: it needs to be easy to remember and type, while the Name field says who you are in plain words.
What makes a handle memorable
- Short. Every character is one more chance to mistype it. If two options are equally good, take the shorter one.
- Sayable. Read it out loud as if you were telling a friend. If you have to add “with two Ls and an underscore”, people will get it wrong when they hear it on a podcast or in a video.
- Spellable. Avoid creative spellings, silent letters and places where two words run together into a confusing string of letters.
- A signal of your niche. A word like bakes, fit, travels or studio tells a stranger what you post before they open a single post.
- The same everywhere. A handle you can also get on TikTok, YouTube and as a domain makes you much easier to find and tag.
- Built to last. Skip jokes, trends and years that will date you, and anything that ties you to one format you might outgrow.
Using periods and underscores well
Separators exist to split words where the letters would otherwise collide or misread. “maya.bakes” is clearer than “mayabakes” only if the joined version is hard to read; when the words separate cleanly without help, leave the separator out.
Use one separator at most, and prefer the period when you can. A period is easy to say (“maya dot bakes”), while an underscore is awkward out loud and can disappear when a handle is shown underlined as a link. Doubled or trailing separators, like “maya__bakes” or “mayabakes_”, are the first thing people forget when they try to find you.
What to do when the name you want is taken
- Add your niche: mayabakes, maya.sourdough, mayafitness.
- Add a verb or role: bakedbymaya, mayamakes, cookwithmaya, maya.designs.
- Add a short prefix: the, hey, its, hello, or real (themayakitchen, hey.maya).
- Use initials or your middle name if your full name is common.
- For a local business, add the city or neighbourhood; for a brand, try studio, co or hq.
- Avoid random numbers and extra letters at the end. They look like a second-choice account and are hard to remember.
- Never pose as another person or brand, even with a small tweak to their handle.
Checking availability and changing your username later
This generator does not look up Instagram accounts, so treat every suggestion as an idea, not a guarantee. The quickest check is to search the exact handle in Instagram; the reliable one is to type it into Edit profile, where Instagram will not let you save a username someone else holds. Check TikTok, YouTube and the matching domain at the same time if you want one name everywhere.
You can change your username later from Edit profile, and your followers, posts and messages stay with your account. What does not follow you is anything that points at the old name: links you shared elsewhere, printed QR codes, and @mentions typed out in other people’s captions. The old handle can also be claimed by someone else, so pick a name you expect to keep.
