How to pick a TikTok username with this tool
- 1
Enter your name, niche or brand
Combine who you are with what you post: “Sam, budget travel in Southeast Asia” gives handles with a clear signal; “travel” on its own gives the same names everyone else is trying.
- 2
Choose a style
Professional stays close to your name, Minimal is as short as possible, Funny and Creative play with words, and Aesthetic suits lifestyle, beauty and design accounts.
- 3
Say it out loud, then check it on TikTok
Tap a handle to copy it. Read your favourites aloud the way you would at the end of a video, then try the winner in Edit profile, where TikTok tells you if it is taken.
TikTok username rules
A TikTok username can contain letters, numbers, underscores and periods, and it cannot end with a period. No spaces, emoji or other symbols. Each username is unique, so if someone already holds the one you want, you need a variation.
TikTok only lets you change your username once every 30 days. That is enough to fix a mistake, but not to keep experimenting, so it is worth spending ten minutes on the choice now rather than living with a rushed one for a month.
Username vs name: what each one is for
Your TikTok profile has two names. The username is the @handle: it is unique, it sits in your profile link, it is what people type to tag you, and it appears on the watermark when someone downloads one of your videos and shares it elsewhere. The name (sometimes called the nickname or display name) is the bold text on your profile. It can include spaces and does not have to be unique.
Use each for its strength. Keep the handle short and easy to type, and use the name to say who you are in plain words, for example “Sam | Budget Travel”. You do not need to cram your whole niche into the handle if the name already does that job.
Make it easy to say in a video
On TikTok people often hear your handle before they see it: “follow for part two”, a duet, a shout-out from another creator. A good handle survives being spoken once. If you would have to spell it out, add “underscore” twice, or explain that the O is a zero, viewers will search for the wrong account.
Test it: say it once to a friend and ask them to type it without looking. If they get it right first time, it works. Periods are easier to say than underscores (“sam dot travels”), and plain words beat creative spellings.
Matching your handle across platforms
- Use the same handle on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube if you can. Viewers who like a video often look for you on another app, and one name makes that effortless.
- Check all the platforms you care about before you claim any of them, so you do not end up with the perfect TikTok handle and no matching one elsewhere.
- If one platform is taken, change as little as possible: add a period, or a short word like “the” or “hey”, rather than a completely different name.
- Avoid tying the handle to one format or trend you may drop in a year (a series name, a challenge, a year). Your niche can grow; your handle should still fit.
When the handle you want is taken
- Add what you do: samtravels, sam.onabudget, cheaptripswithsam.
- Add a prefix: the, its, hey or real (itssamtravels).
- Use your initials or a nickname people already call you.
- Swap a random number for a meaningful word. “sam.travels” is easier to remember than “samtravels1994”.
- Do not copy another creator’s handle with a tiny change. It confuses viewers and can get reported as impersonation.
