How to get the transcript of a TikTok video
- 1
Copy the TikTok link
In the TikTok app tap Share, then Copy link. On desktop, copy the URL from the address bar. Short vm.tiktok.com links work too.
- 2
Paste it above and click Get transcript
We read TikTok’s captions for the video and turn them into clean text.
- 3
Copy or download the script
Switch between paragraphs and a timestamped version, then copy it or save it as a .txt file.
What creators do with a TikTok transcript
- Break down a viral hook: see the first two sentences of a video that blew up, word for word, and work out why they stop the scroll.
- Remake a video in your own words: use the script as a starting point for your own take, in your voice and your language, instead of copying it.
- Repurpose your own TikToks: turn a video you already made into a LinkedIn post, an X thread, a newsletter or a carousel.
- Captions and accessibility: get an accurate text version for captions, descriptions or viewers who prefer reading.
How to study a viral video’s hook from its transcript
Watching a video that took off tells you it worked. Reading its script tells you why. On paper, without the face, the music and the edit, you can see exactly what the words are doing in the first few seconds, which is where most viewers decide to stay or swipe.
Pull the transcripts of three to five videos that did well in your niche and read only the opening lines side by side. Then ask the same questions of each:
- What type of hook is it? A bold claim, a result shown first, a direct question, a “stop doing this” warning, or a story that starts in the middle of the action.
- What does it promise? Good hooks tell the viewer what they will get by staying: a fix, a secret, a payoff to a story. Find the sentence where that promise is made.
- How fast does it get to the point? Count the words before the first useful sentence. Openings that spend a line on “hey guys, so today…” give viewers time to leave.
- Where is the promise paid off? Use the timestamps to see whether the answer comes at the end (holding attention) or early (followed by extra value).
- What is not in the transcript? On-screen text, a visual reveal or a sound can be part of the hook. Watch the video once more with the script in hand.
How accurate is a TikTok transcript?
The transcript comes from the captions TikTok has for the video. These are usually generated automatically from the audio, and creators can edit them before posting, so some are word-perfect and others carry the speech recognition’s mistakes. Fast talking, slang, background music and names of people or products are where errors show up most.
For studying structure and hooks, small errors do not matter. If you plan to quote someone or reuse a specific claim, jump to the timestamp and listen to that line before you publish it. And treat the script as research, not material: take the pattern, then write your version with your own examples.
